Abstract: The taxonomic study presented herein delves toresolve the identity of yet another stray name into the intricate world of Gingers. Through meticulous analysis of historical herbarium records, literature, and other available resources, we attempted to resolve the long-standing uncertainty surrounding the identity of Zingiber squarrosum sensu Roscoe. While describing the taxon in his custody, Roscoe clearly indicated doubt about itsidentity as being a distinct undescribed taxon. In the absence of any extant herbarium material, we thoroughly examined Roscoe’s original description and complex color drawing, which served as the primary and most reliable source of original material. Our research reveals that Z. squarrosum sensu Roscoe is conspecific with Z.kangleipakenseKishor & Škornièk., leading us to treat it as a synonym under the latter. Thus, in spite of its discovery in 1827, the taxon remained in shadow for 186 years again to be rediscovered newly in 2013.

Keywords: British India, Roxburgh, taxonomy, nomenclature, illustration, synonym, Zingiberaceae.
